A Request To the Media About the Killer At Northern Illinois

February 14, 2008

The heartbreaking news out of Northern Illinois University this afternoon is a solemn reminder of the depravity of man, the fragility of our own lives. Not much can be said, except to weep with those who weep. I offer thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims.

With that said, I would like to petition the media with a request: Please do not, as you did with the killer at Virginia Tech, parade the name and picture of this killer around the television and internet. Please do not make him a celebrity. Resist the lure of juicy tidbits and bigger Nielsen ratings and more newspaper sells. Stand on principle; respect the fact that some people will harm anyone to be on TV. Have integrity, and may no one hear this man’s name or see his face. Make him an example to others who would consider his ways.

Do not make killers to be stars. They are not; they are thieves of life and joy. Shun them, and do not honor them.

I discovered this post via a search, as I’ve just written pretty much exactly what you’ve said here.

Nicely put. But I doubt you or I can make any difference.

  2. Agreed. We could only wish the media had that high of an ethic.
